On Friday, 5 December, we were delighted to welcome 40 students and staff from Doukas School in Athens — a respected Cognita school known for its innovation, academic strength, and commitment to student character development. Their visit to the International School Zurich North (ISZN) formed part of a week-long science-focused educational trip across Switzerland, connecting history, theory and cutting-edge research.

For the students participating, all of whom show exceptional aptitude in physics, mathematics and the natural sciences, this journey was designed to bring their classroom studies to life. Their programme included visits to CERN in Geneva — the centrepiece of their trip — and the Einstein Museum in Bern. ISZN was selected as the third major stop because of our shared Cognita values, global perspective and commitment to continuous educational development.

From the moment the Doukas group arrived, the atmosphere on campus was warm, curious and full of energy. Our students welcomed their guests with kindness and confidence, engaging in conversations about school life, science, and future study aspirations. It was wonderful to see how naturally students from both countries connected and how quickly they found common ground.

A highlight of the day was the lively Science Quiz, designed and led by ISZN’s own Science Ambassadors. The activity created a spirited environment where students collaborated, challenged one another, and demonstrated impressive knowledge. The exchange reinforced ISZN’s strong culture of student leadership — and offered our visitors a memorable experience of international teamwork in action.

Cultural moments added joy throughout the day, including spontaneous Greek singing and dancing that filled the room with smiles.

Reflecting on the visit, Sofia Areti Papadopoulou, Deputy Principal of the Lyceum at Doukas School, shared insights into the purpose behind their trip:
“Our students have a particular interest in the natural sciences. This trip was designed to give them real-world exposure to cutting-edge science and its history. Visiting CERN, the Einstein Museum and ISZN allowed them to experience the full journey of scientific progress — from theory to major research facilities to international cooperation in education.”

She also highlighted the value of visiting ISZN specifically:
“We wanted to visit a Cognita school in Switzerland, and ISZN’s profile — with its global perspective and emphasis on continuous development — made it a perfect match. We hope our students gained an appreciation for diversity, insights into different teaching methodologies, and the chance to build meaningful connections with peers who share their academic interests.”

ISZN’s Head of Science, Alex McCarron, echoed this sentiment:
“Sharing different experiences and touching base with teachers from other systems is incredibly valuable for me as an educator.”

The Doukas team expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm welcome and thoughtful programme prepared by the ISZN community, describing the visit as a highlight of their time in Switzerland. They also voiced their enthusiasm for hosting ISZN in Athens in the future — an opportunity we look forward to exploring.

Visits like this exemplify the strength of the Cognita global network and its commitment to unity, shared learning and purposeful international experiences. We are grateful for the enriching exchange and look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate across the Cognita family.
