Every student at ISZN has a story. This year we begin sharing them with a new series called Student Spotlight. The first story is about Zihan, a Grade 11 student with a passion for mathematics.

In one school year she completed A-Level Mathematics and received the highest grade, an A*.

Enjoying the process

Zihan says her interest in maths comes from the feeling of solving a problem. “I enjoy the challenge. When I finally reach the answer I feel satisfied. That feeling motivates me to keep going.”

She prepared by practicing questions after class, revising weekly, and working through past papers. To manage exam pressure, she also practiced under timed conditions and learned to write her answers more clearly.

A teacher’s view

Maria Romera, Head of the Mathematics Department, followed Zihan’s journey closely. “Completing A-Level Mathematics in one year and achieving an A* in Grade 11 is remarkable. It shows mastery of advanced concepts and the ability to work at an accelerated pace with maturity. This places Zihan among the top students internationally for her age.”

Romera points to determination, curiosity, and resilience as the qualities that stood out. “She looked beyond the curriculum and pushed herself to understand more deeply. Her discipline and motivation made a real difference.”

Zihan felt supported throughout. “Ms Romera gave me extra resources, held revision lessons, and explained difficult ideas whenever I needed help.”

Romera also noticed how Zihan grew during the year. “She became more independent, able to connect ideas across maths and explain her reasoning to others. She set an example for her classmates.”

About Zihan

Zihan balances study with other interests. She plays the violin, listens to music, and watches dramas. These activities help her relax and return to her studies with energy.

In Grade 12 Zihan will take part in the Swiss Mathematics Olympiad and attend the Youth Mathematics Academy at ETH Zurich. She also plans to study Biochemistry or Pharmacology at university, where maths will support her work in research and data analysis.

Celebrating our community

Zihan encourages others to stay disciplined, focus on understanding concepts, and practice regularly. She hopes her experience shows that perseverance and support can help students reach their goals.

Maria sees Zihan’s story as part of ISZN’s learning culture. “We give students the chance to move at their own pace, whether they need time to build confidence or are ready to take on advanced challenges. Zihan’s journey reflects what is possible in this environment.”

This is the first of many student stories we will share. Each one will highlight a different path and the unique qualities that make our community stronger.

Congratulations, Zihan!
