From Static Hair to Pumpkin Volcanoes – Science in Action at ISZN
This week, ISZN’s Primary students are diving into a world of curiosity and discovery during Spooky Science Week — a hands-on celebration of science that combines creativity, critical thinking, and plenty of Halloween fun!
Across the week, students from Pre-K to Grade 5 are rotating through a carousel of themed science stations, each designed to spark wonder and imagination. From bubbling volcanoes to floating ghosts, every experiment offers a chance to explore real scientific principles through play and investigation.
Science in Action – with a Spooky Twist
Under the guidance of our teachers, students are experimenting, questioning, and making predictions — just like real scientists! Some of this week’s highlights include:
-
Dancing Ghosts & Scary Hair: Using static electricity, balloons make tissue ghosts float through the air (and give a few students some wild hairstyles too!).
-
Magic Invisible Ink Pictures: Secret Halloween messages appear as children reveal their hidden designs.
-
Pumpkin Volcanoes & Dancing Corn: Baking soda and vinegar cause colourful fizzing eruptions and lively, bouncing kernels — a fun introduction to chemical reactions.
-
Creepy Crawly Pepper Trick: A drop of soap sends “creepy crawlies” scattering, revealing the magic of surface tension.
-
Spooky Flight: Students build catapults to launch tiny pumpkins skyward, learning about energy and motion.
-
Smelling Science: Mysterious scents — some sweet, some spooky — put students’ noses to the test.
Taking Science Outdoors
Today, the learning moved outside with parachute games on the playground. As students lifted and lowered the parachute, they experienced push and pull forces in action. When lightweight balls were tossed into the air, they watched gravity pull them back down — while air resistance slowed their fall. It’s science in motion and a perfect way to connect physical learning with real-world observation.
More Fun Still to Come
The carousel continues tomorrow with even more experiments and discoveries ahead. Spooky Science Week reminds us all that science is everywhere — in the air we move, the sounds we hear, and even in the fizz of a pumpkin volcano! By experimenting, observing, and exploring together, our young learners are discovering that science is not only about facts and formulas, but about curiosity, teamwork, and fun.
